NHL Odds Leader Penguins Face Test Against Canadians

The Pittsburgh Penguins have jumped to the top of the NHL odds board, and with the return of Sidney Crosby at full health, it appears as though they’ll stay there. This Saturday the Pens will get an opportunity to shore up their Eastern Conference lead with a game against the Montreal Canadiens.

Though Pittsburgh could be considered a legitimate contender with or without their superstar center, the addition of a healthy Crosby puts the 2012 Stanley Cup well within reach. According to Bodog, they have 13/2 odds of making it happen on the NHL futures list - the top such mark in the league.

Before the Pens can start planning any championship parades, however, they’ll have to continue taking care of business in the regular season. In their Hockey Night in Canada matchup against the Habs this weekend, they’ll have to solve Montreal netminder Carey Price whose hit-or-miss success in the crease has been a major factor in where his club sits in the standings.

Although the Canadiens have fumbled around the .500 mark throughout the first quarter of the season, they remain an intriguing choice on the NHL odds board. With 35/1 odds of winning the Stanley Cup, they could pay out significantly if they can bounce back from early injuries and climb into the playoff picture.

Will Montreal send a message in their big Saturday tilt? Or will the game simply serve as one more opportunity for Pittsburgh to show why they’re the top dogs in the East.
