The Eastern Conference standings are slowly starting to broaden, and teams like the Washington Capitals and Montreal Canadiens may find themselves on the outside looking in if they don’t start putting up some extended winning streaks.

The two forlorn franchises will meet for the first of four times this season on Wednesday night in Montreal, where the newest Canadien, Rene Bourque, will face the Capitals for the first time since giving Nicklas Backstrom a concussion on Jan. 3. Vigilante justice may be in order.

The Canadiens’ woes have been well documented. From the hiring of Randy Cunneyworth to the abysmal power play to the Mike Cammalleri trade last week, the team is ripe for the pickings right now.

Meanwhile, the Capitals are in the middle of a 10 games in 18 days stretch leading up to the All-Star break, so they may not be at full strength for the game.

They’ve had a decent run as of late, but hardly anything that will guarantee they play beyond mid-April. Now is the time for Alex Ovechkin to break out and earn the All-Star nod he garnered.

Think you know how it will go down? Weigh in at Bodog now.
