7th April 2011
Marty Turco may be thinking of a career as a bookie or hockey handicapper after his NHL career is over. Turco was apparently betting on an NHL hockey game from the Chicago Blackhawks bench at the Bell Centre in Montreal on Tuesday night.
During the April 5th NHL game between the Blackhawks and the Canadians in Montreal, Turco was betting casually with a fan during the game.
The nameless fan called in to a Montreal-based radio program to recount the story of the numerous bets he and Turco made during the NHL match up.
The fan claims that he and the 10-year NHL veteran goalie made many wagers during the game, and a wager regarding the game’s outcome.
A photo on Twitter shows Turco sitting on the end of the Chicago bench accepting a Canadian $5 bill from the fan, on which the fan wrote “Habs Rules!” in black Sharpie.
When the Canadiens won 2-1 in overtime, the fan claims Turco handed him a stack of $5 bills, including the original bill, but crossed out “Habs” and wrote “Turco” above it.
In a text message to ESPNChicago.com, Turco admitted to passing the $5 in question back and forth with the fan, but did not admit to accepting any wagers from him.
Turco signed a 1-year, $1.3 million contract with the Blackhawks prior to the 2010-11 season. So, I am sure he can afford the $5!
You can bet on the NHL to make a statement on the ordeal.
Exhibit 14.2 of the current NHL Collective Bargaining Agreement, which applies directly to NHL players, explicitly states “gambling on any NHL Game is prohibited.”
